Portugal Retreats
Alentejo
Sweeping inland from Portugal’s rugged Atlantic coast, Alentejo is an undiscovered gem. One of the least developed and most sparsely populated areas of western Europe, this mostly flat region comprises almost all southern Portugal, extending from just east of the capital Lisbon to the Spanish border and again south to the bustling beaches of the Algarve. Yet despite its size, Alentejo is a place of silence and serenity, with its own distinct culture and authentic atmosphere. Its capital is the UNESCO-listed city of Evora, which is blessed with a 13th-century cathedral, ancient Roman temple, and cobbled squares perfect for relaxed strolling. Beyond lie vast cork forests, wheat fields, olive groves, sleepy villages, and vineyards, the Alentejo is one of Portugal’s leading wine regions. Visitors come to savour the mellow pace, the hearty local farm produce and fresh seafood, and the near-guaranteed warmth, Alentejo is famous for its blazing summer heat. Sealing the deal is the region’s dramatic coastline, where rustic fishing villages dot cliff-backed beaches of uncrowded sands and surf-friendly seas.
Monchique
Just an hour’s drive from Faro airport and 20 minutes inland from the coast, the historic mountainside town of Monchique is located at the foot of the Fóia and Picota mountains, one of the most peaceful areas in the Algarve region. Fountains and pretty flowers adorn the town’s central square whilst colourful houses line the narrow streets contrasting with the brilliant white exterior of the local church. Monchique’s traditional restaurants offer great value and service with a choice of local dishes including piri piri chicken, Iberian black pork and locally caught fish of the day. For spectacular views whilst you dine, pick a restaurant with a terrace so that you can relax and enjoy your surroundings. An ideal retreat location for those wanting to combine relaxation with nature, the Monique region is stunning with green forests, waterfalls, natural springs, cork trees and the scent of eucalyptus trees. Well known for its local craftmanship, wicker baskets, pottery and cleverly crafted items made of cork and wood are for sale in the local shops.
